Kara Merritt by Jennifer Albright

The number 116 belonged to Kara Merritt in 2006 where she competed in the Youth division of the GNCC Series. If you have not had the opportunity to talk with Kara, she is a busy 16 year old who somehow finds the time to fit in GNCC racing. I had a chance to ask Kara a few questions to see what her plans are for the 2007 GNCC season.

"I don't give up very easily and I'm a perfectionist. I like to get things done the right way!"

Kara what type of quad did you ride in 2006?

Kasea Skyhawk 90cc

And what series are you competing in?
GNCC Youth ATV Racing- 90cc Production Modified 8-15, CRA (Competition Riders Of America) Sr. Mini Quads

You live in Akron Ohio, and are in school. You have said you are involved in other sports besides racing can you tell us about that?
I am in many more sports than just racing. I play volleyball, basketball and softball. I am very dedicated to each sport. I barely have any time to sleep; I am so busy with all my extra sports. Racing is defiantly my favorite sport. It such a rush sitting at the starting line knowing everyone at the line wants to win!

Who is your support and who works on your quad?
My dad, myself, and sometimes my brother Josh helps to work on my quad. My family is a big importance in my life, they always come first. I don't give up very easily and I'm a perfectionist. I like to get things done the right way! I'm not a very good loser, but I know there’s always a next time to so what I can do.

Have you been racing a long time?
9 years, but the last to years we've been racing the series for points.

How many of those years have you been involved with the GNCC?
2 years

How did you get started in ATV racing Kara?
My dad got me racing. He used to race when he was younger. I actually started on a dirt bike but in time he got me a quad. Is there something that keeps you coming back? The challenge keeps me racing. I'm never perfect in any race; there are always things that I can improve on between each lap or each race.

Do you have a favorite GNCC track?
The John Penton...it’s a fast and muddy track!

Is there anyone you look up to?
All the girl racers in the GNCC morning race, they lead those boys/men and show them how it’s done.

Do you have any favorite racers that stand out in your mind?
Traci Cecco and Chris Borich...they always try and finish the best they can. They are never giving up.

"Racing is defiantly my favorite sport. It such a rush sitting at the starting line knowing everyone at the line wants to win!"

What particular racing memory do you have that stands out in your mind?
My best memory was in my local series, CRA, at LLR. I was in 1st place on the 1st lap and then my vent on my gas cap got clogged with dirt so my engine shut off. I couldn't get it started. Everyone passed me including the 3 classes behind us. I was really mad because I was doing so good. So I started it up again after my dad fixed it, by pulling the gas cap tub off. I raced my hardest figuring I would never catch anyone because they were so far ahead of me. Next, thing I knew I was catching up with my class and I kept passing and passing more of them. When the checkered flag came out I was in 2nd place 3 seconds behind the leader. I had made such a come back. My dad was really happy for me and I showed him that I was a racer and could do anything I put my mind to and really wanted. It was a very muddy race but yet so much fun! Even though I got 2nd I was really pleased with my performance.

You did have some hardships this year when running up front – can you tell us about that?
It seems in the GNCC's when ever I'm in 2nd place on the last lap something bad always happens to my quad and I end up in 5th or 6th. It happened to me at The John Penton race. I was in 2nd place and I ran out of gas and I even had stopped to get gas. It also happened to me at Powerline Park. I was in 2nd place on the last lap and my gas cap vent got clogged with mud. It really upset me that this keeps happening but i know there just bumps in my road to success.

So, what are your plans for the 2007 season?
Because I am 16 I have to move up next year. I will probably be racing a 400ex in the women's class next year.

What is your best accomplishment in your 9 years of racing?
Well I have not accomplished my goal yet. Which is getting the podium but I've come very close.

Who would you like to express thanks to Kara?
All my friends that race and my family, they are all my support system. Without them I couldn't be doing what I'm doing right now...So, THANK YOU!
