Corry Weller

If you have never traveled to the West Coast for ITP Quadcross MX racing you may not have ever seen the likes of a blonde racer who displays beauty on and off the track. Corry Weller of Chandler, AZ has been making her name well known by winning, smiling and making her racing lifestlye a family matter.
This racer is also the photographer behind wellerracing.com and supplies a lot of the world with photos of the ITP Quadcross series!


We caught up with Corry and asked her a small list of questions to discover a little more about her.

How long have you been racing? I bought my first quad in 2001, and I started racing it about 2 weeks later…

Since you began racing what has been your biggest personal accomplishment? Well, I don’t know about the biggest accomplishment, but one of the weekends I’m most proud of was a WORCS race in Taft, CA about 1 year and half years ago.  I had a stock YFZ, and I ran 3 classes that weekend.  I got the holeshot in my 30+ B class, and I did really well in my 3 classes.  It was cool doing well on a stock quad, and that was something I was really proud of. I also had a great season last year in the ITP Series in the Women’s intermediate class.  I missed a race at the first of the season, and still did well enough and won enough races to make it a points battle for 1st/2nd place overall by the end of the series.

What is you favorite place to race? I really like Glen Helen, but it doesn't’t like me very much – and I love my home track, Speedworld – but my favorite place to race is up at the Whiplash Snowflake race – it’s a “desert” type race up in the mountains in Arizona – the course is long but beautiful, and very challenging!  That’s my favorite all-time place to race!

Being from the West Coast how do you view the East Coast nationals?  I see the East Coast Nationals as the ultimate race series.  I see that as THE place to be if you really want to race with the best in the country.  However, I don’t know how much longer that will be true - out here, in the West, we are getting faster and faster each year – and with the ITP Series, we have a great series to prepare us for the GNC’s, nowadays. 

Do you think the competition in the West is growing?  I definitely do.  Just in the two seasons I have raced in the ITP Series and some of the WORCS races, I have seen our Pro riders and our amateur riders get so much faster.  The numbers for both series are growing rapidly, and it seems someone will come into the series and just blow people away, and it makes everyone else step up their game just that much more.  This last year in the ITP Series, I have seen so many classes really stepping it up!

At the GNC nationals your name is actually very recognized yet you only get to race one a year. Do you think your rider makes that impact on people? I didn’t know that people back there knew who I was – not much, anyway.  That’s crazy!  I remember the first National I raced at Glen Helen was on my stock Banshee, and I remember people coming up to me after the races and saying “you did really good out there!” even though I sucked! HAHA!  Maybe it’s just because I looked like I was having a great time – which I was!  I think maybe I have just been in this sport long enough, and have had the chance to meet so many people now from the East Coast (and all over, actually) that they remember my name, and that it’s not so much my riding as that fact that I just love meeting racers I admire and respect.  Plus I take a lot of pictures these days! That might help!

Are you content with the ITP Quadcross Series, or (if money were no object) would you like to try the GNC or WPSA series?  I love the ITP Series, because it’s close to home, and it’s a fun series.  I have gotten to know all of the Pro riders because my husband races Pro, and I know so many of the people involved in the series now.  It’s so much fun to be familiar with everyone you race with, and to watch this series grow – to feel comfortable to try new classes and different things.  On the other hand, it’s hard to get faster if you don’t challenge yourself with new competition and new tracks.  But I’m not in racing to be the very best; I missed that boat about 10 years ago! I’m in it to have a good time and to experience a new series getting bigger…  So, I guess my answer is I’m content with the ITP Series.  It’s the perfect amount of races, on tracks I really enjoy, with people I enjoy racing with and it’s close to home.

Your a mom, a wife, day job worker and a racer - how busy is your daily life? Oh, my gosh!  I need about 10 more hours each day!  When we are really practicing a lot, it’s pretty crazy. My kids are getting older, so they are easier now than they were a few years ago.  They can actually help at the races now, so that’s nice.  But we were practicing 2 times a week for a while, and every night we were either washing quads, washing gear, packing gear, or riding – only to turn around and do it all over again.  Our poor yard looks terrible, because we never have a free day on the weekends to really spend any time on it! Plus I write articles and do race coverage, so on race days – it can get even crazier, with watching the kids, pitting for Jason, racing my own motos, and covering the Pro races also…talk about stress!  But it’s all fun!

What keeps you motivated to constantly go to the track? I love to ride.  I just love the feeling and the adrenaline and the confidence you feel when you are so smooth on the track.  When that feeling stops, I probably won’t do it anymore.  That, and I get out of shape REALLY fast at 34, so if I miss even one practice, I pay for it for about two weeks! 

Your married to a Pro rider, how much input does he offer when you ride, race or practice?  Yeah, I’m lucky to be married to someone else that rides! We don’t really practice together, per say.  He has his own practice speeds he needs to stick with, and we have to get in as much solid practice as we can – so we ride at the same time, but not necessarily together. He does help me with my jumps, however!  He will let me know if it’s something I can do or something that I might get hurt on, and if it’s really challenging, he will have me follow him over it until I am comfortable with it.  That’s the biggest way he helps me.  He knows my limits, my abilities…. he knows what scares me, and I fully trust him when he tells me I can do something.  That trust has gotten me over some huge jumps in the past! 

Do you want your kids to race? Everyone asks me that, and my instant response is always NO!  I know, I’m a big hypocrite, but I can’t stand the thought of my kids even getting their feelings hurt at school, let alone put them knowingly into a very risky situation, when in reality, they don’t fully comprehend the risks they are taking. They can’t – they are just too young. I, on the other hand, do understand the risks – and it’s something that as a mother, I just can’t do.  They ride – they have quads, and that’s fine with me.  But the racing will have to wait until they are about 18.

Any big changes coming in the near future?  Actually, yes!  I will be getting into another form of racing in the near future – and it has me really excited – but I don’t really want to say what it is yet – it’s fun trying to keep it a secret for now!
